  • Born in 1957 – currently living and working in Hanoi.
  • Graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Arts.
  • Began studying lacquer techniques from Artisans working in traditional painting studios in Hanoi and the nearby provinces.
  • Joined the army in 1978.
  • In 1986, he founded Nhà Sàn Studio in Tay Ho – Hanoi whilst studying at university.
  • He is a member of the Vietnam Association of Visual Arts and the International Lacquer Artists Association since 1996.
  • Bùi Hữu Hùng’s creations use a combination of materials such as acrylics, oil paints, lacquer, mixed media & sculpt. But his use oflacquer with traditional techniques and local paints is what he is most well-known for. Hùng’s international exposure began even before the formal opening of the Vietnamese economy – the “Đổi Mới”. In 1982, three of his lacquer landscapes were exhibited in Warsaw – Poland, and in 1983 his work, ‘Still Life by the Window’ was showcased in Sophia – Bulgaria. Hùng participated in his first group exhibition “Art Spring” hosted by Alliance Française, in Hanoi in 1993.
  • The following year he established the “Avant-Garde” group in Hanoi with Trương Tân, Lê Hồng Thái, Đỗ Minh Tâm, etc., they hadtheir first Avant-Garde exhibition in Hanoi at the 29th Hàng Bài Exhibition Center, a show sponsored by the German Embassy. This exhibition made a mark for Vietnamese artists during the “Đổi Mới” era, generating serious attention from neighboring countries.
  • In 1996, the appearance of the painting ‘Ancient Stage’ at the ‘Lacquer International’ exhibition at the Fuitijia Musuem in Tokyo -Japan, marked the artist’s place in the World’s professional Artists – Bùi Hữu Hùng, along with Lê Hồng Thái and two other artists, were admitted to the International Lacquer Artists Association.
  • In 1997, his works were shown at the ‘Sacred Seasons’ exhibition at the Notices Gallery in the Four Seasons Hotel – Singapore, a show sponsored by the Hilton Group, with NguyễnTư Nghiêm and Nguyễn Chung. (Tư Nghiêm represented artists from the Đông Dương School of Fine Arts. Nguyễn Chung represented Southern artists before 1945. Bùi Hữu Hùng represented ‘the Đổi Mới and Contemporary period’ in Vietnam).
  • Since his first solo exhibition in 1995 at the Australian Embassy, in Hanoi – he has gone on to represent the spirit of emerging Vietnamese artists with innumerable soloexhibitions worldwide, including Miami (US), London (UK), Hong Kong, Singapore, Paris, Dubai, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, India, etc.

Màu sắc trong mỹ thuật Việt – Sự giao thoa của hai bán cầu

Người phương Tây thường yêu thích màu sắc mạnh mẽ, tương phản cao, như đỏ rực, xanh cobalt, vàng tươi – thể hiện cá tính và năng lượng. Trong khi đó, mỹ thuật phương Đông lại thiên về những gam màu trầm ấm, tự nhiên: nâu đất, xanh lục, trắng ngà, vàng nghệ, đỏ son. Các họa sĩ Việt Nam, đặc biệt là những tên tuổi lớn như Nguyễn Gia Trí, Tô Ngọc Vân, rất giỏi trong việc pha trộn hai trường phái màu sắc này. Họ có thể dùng một mảng đỏ rực phương Tây, nhưng đặt nó bên cạnh một vùng xanh lục trầm buồn phương Đông. Kết quả là những bức tranh hiện đại vừa đủ sức thu hút, vừa đủ sâu lắng.
