  • Hoang Phuong Vy, born in 1962 in Hanoi, is one of the few artists who follow the naïve style of Vietnamese contemporary art. He graduated from Hanoi Architectural University in 1984 and is a member of both the Vietnam Fine Art Association and the Hanoi Fine Art Association. His boldly colored, minimalist oil paintings are reminiscent of Vietnamese folk art and depict scenes of traditional, everyday life that evoke feelings of simplicity, purity, and playfulness. He has won several Vietnamese art awards such as the Hanoi Fine Art Association Award (1992, 1994, 1996), the Vietnamese Young Artists Exhibition Award, Vietnam Fine Art Association Award (1996 & 1999), and the ASEAN Artists Exhibition Award (1998). His works were shown in Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Japan, and the United States. These shows include a Solo Exhibition at CEAE, Hanoi, Vietnam (1997); “A Winding River,” Washington D.C. (1997); “VietnamNow!”, The East Gallery, Toronto (2001); Solo Exhibition at Gallery 55 – Bangkok, Thailand (2002); Solo Exhibition at Hong Kong (2004); “Childhood”, Que Gallery, Hanoi (2005); “Separate Paths”, Thang Long Gallery, Hanoi (2001); “To the new season”, Thang Long Gallery, Hanoi (2002); and “Half the Sky”, The East Gallery, Toronto (2012).
